The novel follows the young Elizabeth Bennet and how she learns about the consequences of hasty judgements and the difference between superficial goodness and actual goodness.

Mr. Bennet, Elizabeth’s father, has 5 daughters but no male heir to pass his property on to when he dies. Elizabeth and her sisters and mother would be left destitute if not at least one of the girls marry well to support the others. The family lives a a quiet life until the distinguished Mr Bingley and his friend Mr Darcy comes calling.
